The combination of smoking and asbestos strongly increases the cancer risk associated with both of these exposures separately. The risk of lung cancer in a smoking asbestos worker may increase up to 50-fold. The screening for lung cancer in persons exposed to asbestos should be considered according to the medical knowledge current at the time in question. Remember to assess the possibility of occupational disease in persons exposed to asbestos.
