Anticoagulant therapy is the only form of treatment that unquestionably has been shown to improve the prognosis of patients with atrial fibrillation (AF).The most important aspect in clinical practice is to identify and treat patients who will benefit from long-term anticoagulant therapy. The choice between warfarin and the new class of anticoagulants (apixaban, dabigatran, rivaroxaban) should be made individually taking into account the benefits and risks of the drugs as well as the patient's wishes.
