The insertion of a tympanostomy tube (ventilation tube, grommet) is always based on individual evaluation. Tympanostomy tubes reduce the incidence of acute otitis media (AOM), relieve symptoms of inflammation and make it easier to diagnose infections. The most common problems associated with tympanostomy tubes are otorrhoea, a blocked tube and persistent tympanic membrane perforation.
