Assess the severity of the depression (mild/moderate/severe/psychotic) because the setting and mode of management is largely determined by this. Assess functional capacity, ability to manage situations at work and at home, and the need for sick leave, supportive measures or hospitalization. Evaluate the risk of suicide and arrange for frequent follow-up in outpatient care or for hospitalization (voluntary or involuntary psychiatric care). The use of both antidepressive medication and psychotherapy is usually justified. The best result is often obtained by combining them.
